The Need
Government Policy
The serious issues of climate change and security of energy supply are understood by the UK Government, and in 2002, as part of the solution the Government introduced the Renewables Obligation (RO), which for the first time set formal and legally binding targets for electricity suppliers. The original target for the RO aimed for 10% of the UK electricity supply to be sourced from new renewable technologies by 2010. In 2003 this commitment was further strengthened to 15% by 2015, with the intent expressed within the 2003 Energy White Paper (Our Energy Future – Creating a Low Carbon Economy) to further extend this to 20% by 2020.
Increases in renewable energy generation together with the implementation of energy efficiency to reduce demand and the development of sustainable transportation fuels, are all on the agenda to meet the concerns of climate change and local energy supply.
